E-Verify Program Use Growing by U. S. Employers

The U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has published a report that its E-Verify program is now being used by more than 500,000 U. S. companies and that 1,400 new users employ the service every week. E-Verify is a free online service that employers can use to verify the eligibility of potential employees applying to legally work in the U. S. These potential employees may be U. S. citizens or foreign citizens who have appropriate authorization. The free internet program is touted as being fast and accurate, comparing information sent to it with data from the Department of Homeland Security as well as the Social Security Administration. It has received one of the highest ratings for a federal service in customer satisfaction.

E-Verify was established in 1996. An employer submits the information contained in the form I-9, called an Employment Eligibility Verification. The E-Verify program then compares the information submitted with information documented on U. S. passports and visas, immigration and naturalization records, drivers' licenses and identification cards issued by states, and Social Security records. The E-Verify program can even provide a photo of the applicant in cases where they exist so that the employer can compare it to what he has been given. When all of the information is verified, the E-Verify system provides an employment authorization okay.
