Attorney Lloyd Bennett & 530 Lawyers Participate in AILA Lobby Day

Last week, New Jersey Immigration Attorney Lloyd E. Bennett joined hundreds of lawyers from around the nation to meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill for the National Day of Action. The group of 500+ attorneys, all members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, held over 400 Congressional and Senatorial meetings to lobby for reforms which would improve the lives of immigrants and their families. Attorney Lloyd Bennett met with the legislative aides of New Jersey Representatives Booker, Menendez, Gottheimer, Sires, Coleman, Sherill, Smith, and Van Drew.

Each staff member was handed a copy of the AILA Lobby Day reader. One of our goals was to inform representatives of a.) how vital immigrants are to our communities, and b.) how bad the immigration system has gotten. Making life easier for immigrants is not just the right thing to do for our immigrant neighbors—it’s the right thing to do for everyone.

Here are the main points we used to educate our representatives:

  • USCIS processing times are up almost 20%
  • Overall case filings are on the decline down 20%
  • Ove 17,000 DACA recipients live in NJ
  • There are over 900,000 immigration court cases in a backlog nationwide
  • Approximately 150,000 backlogged cases in New Jersey
  • New Jersey has almost 2,000,000 immigrants, making up 22% of the population
  • Immigrants have over $54,000,000,000 in spending power
  • Immigrants pay over $13,000,000,000 in federal taxes

In its current state, the immigration system makes it difficult for businesses to stay competitive, for families to reunite with loved ones, and for the persecuted to seek protection. USCIS is facing crisis-level delays, putting barriers in the way of legal immigration. The courts are tied up by policies that keep judges from making independent decisions and making fair rulings. At the border, migrants and asylum seekers are turned away, detained, given short screenings, or are subjected to abuse.

The National Day of Action was organized to call on Congress and the executive branch to put aside partisanship to address real problems. We need solutions that truly serve America’s residents, and it’s only by working together that the White House and Congress can fix the system and ensure America’s prosperity in the 21st century and beyond.
