On May 16, 2019, President Donald Trump discussed his new immigration plan in the Rose Garden of the White House. The Trump administration’s new immigration proposal is to create a new immigration system, Build America, that will allow people to immigrate to the United States with a point system. Unfortunately, this proposal will severely impact more than 4 million people in family and employment-based lines who have been waiting for years to immigrate. During the speech, President Donald Trump also stated that all current family and employment-based preference categories would be eliminated. Because current immigration applications will be eliminated, the many years that people have been waiting to immigrate will be lost. Immigrants in the green card backlog would lose their place in line because they will be required to apply under the new point-based system. Although the White House has said that people who are currently waiting for green cards will receive additional points, there is still no way to know if those “additional points” they receive will be enough to grant them their green card.
The Changes Proposed by the Trump Administration
Millions of people who have been waiting a long time to receive permanent residence don’t know if their green card will be secured under the new point system. Since the plan still has to be transformed into legislative language and introduced in Congress, changes are likely to be made. It is almost assured that the Democratic party will oppose the elimination of nearly all family immigration categories and the backlogs of immigrants’ applications. Many analysists believe that this new immigration point-system might not work, especially for businesses. However, if this new immigration system isn’t successful, it will be nearly impossible to fix.
Who Will Be Affected?
According to the U.S. Department of State, more than 3.6 million people have been waiting in family-based immigration preference backlogs since November 1, 2018. The leading countries of origin for people with family backlogs include Mexico, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, and China. More than half a million people waiting in employment-based immigrant backlogs must achieve enough points to remain in the country, since there will no longer be any “pending” green card application, only “Build America” visas. Millions and millions of people are upset because they have waited patiently in immigration backlogs and have applied by the rules, only to be told that they have wasted their time.
