Most people don't think that a person could win permanent residency through a lottery, but since 1995 the United States government has made available a total of 50,000 diversity visas each year through the Diversity Immigration Visa Lottery ( AKA the " Green Card Lottery," "U.S. Visa Lottery," " DV Lottery" or the "U.S. Immigration Lottery"). V isas offered through the DV Lottery grant a foreign national permanent residency and work status to winners.
