About Green Cards
When a person who desires to become a legal permanent resident of the United States, they apply for a green card, also called form I-551. When a person has been granted permanent residency, he will be given a permanent alien registration card, which previously used to be colored green, hence the term "green card". This green card indicates the holder has been granted immigration benefits, which allow the individual to live and work in the United States. A green card can be issued as a conditional resident, status, which is good for two years. Permanent resident cards are issued for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the resident remains in good standing, without committing any crimes or moral turpitude. Green cards can be obtained through family, employment, asylum, investment and a lottery. The process to get a green card is called adjustment of status
.
A green card holder is eligible for naturalization (become a citizen) if they so desire, after three years when married to a U.S. citizen, and five years if through any other means assuming the qualifications are met. See our citizenship section for more information or contact the Law Offices of Lloyd E. Bennett, Esq., P.C., New Jersey Immigration lawyer.

As a short aside, beware of any notaries attempting to provide immigration services in New Jersey. A Notary Public is not an attorney and is in no way authorized to assist you in your immigrations needs. Although in Spanish a "notario publico" refers to someone with legal expertise, a notary public in the United States does not have that authority. Do not do business with these unscrupulous people and report them to Attorney General's office at 1-800-375-5283.
